Hazira-Surat, July 25, 2023: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, two of the world’s leading steel manufacturing organisations, conducted a high-stakes mock drill in collaboration with Surat police and fire teams from surrounding industries.
The mock emergency situation was created by the fire service department to test the effectiveness of equipment and training imparted to fire personnel to handle such situations. The mock drill was also instrumental in checking the preparedness and response time for evacuation of all occupants of the offices.
As per the Mock Drill, on Tuesday morning, a leakage from Natural Gas (NG) pipelines was detected and subsequently sparking the fire incident and burn injuries to two personnel. Due to the swift response and preparedness of the Fire Service team, the situation was efficiently controlled, and further damage was averted.
To tackle the emergency effectively, a team comprising two technicians and an engineer was immediately deployed to the leakage site. The AM/NS India team, along with the Surat police and fire teams, sprang into action to contain the situation. Seven designated roads were identified to ensure quick access to the incident site within the vast plant premises.
The moment the fire was detected, the plant control room and AM/NS India’s fire control room were promptly notified, and an emergency siren was sounded at 10:48 am to alert all personnel of the unfolding situation. The entire fire control exercise persisted until 11:10 am, demonstrating the commitment of AM/NS India to prioritise the safety of its workforce.
Captain Sujoykumar Ganguli (IN), Head of Security Vigilance & Fire Services at AM/NS India, Hazira, emphasised the importance of conducting such mock drills at vital installations and critical units for the safety of all personnel involved. “Ensuring the safety of our personnel and safeguarding our critical units is our topmost priority at AM/NS India,” said Captain Sujoykumar Ganguli. “Mock drills play a crucial role in preparing our teams to handle unforeseen emergencies with confidence and efficiency. Today’s incident highlights our preparedness’s effectiveness and the seamless coordination between our team, Surat police, and fire services. We are committed to continuous improvement and will learn from every drill to reinforce a safety culture within our organisation.”
The mock drill was organised following a directive from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch), Surat, which urged vital installations like AM/NS India’s Hazira steel plant to conduct such exercises regularly. Such drills are not just compliance measures but life-saving initiatives that empower organisations to mitigate risks and respond effectively to emergencies.
